Mensagem:  I don't really understand the system. We hear about it and see it mentioned in books ("John was so happy with his A-levels and his Dad was so excited that he took everyone on a holiday in the Algarve."). The article says "GCSEs remain the central plank of testing at the end of compulsory education." They apparently want to change the name of the system but the exams will stay as a measure of how well the student learned. We have a similar exam here in Florida. It's the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test. It measures how well the student and the school are doing. I don't like it because it seems the teachers spend too much time on the methodology of the exams and not enough on the basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Teachers get bonuses if their students get high scores. Did you see where Harvard (or maybe it's Yale) has decided that only a certain number of students can get honor grades? Seems the teachers were giving out too many top grades and honor diplomas. The value of the system was eroded. The professors didn't want to send anyone out into the cruel, hard world at a disadvantage (being less than perfect). Gimme a break!!
