Dear Miguel, I have just read your request dated January, regarding the meaning of the word Macronesia, sometimes spelt Macaronisia. Well I am at this moment working on a lecture about Madeira, and have in fact visited the island several times. Macronisia is the name given to the islands of Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Azores and Cap Verde. I hope that answers your question. I shall be returning there next week to give a lecture on the plants of Madeira. There are sixtyeight plants that are endemic to Madeira only, and 42 which can be found only in the MACARONESIAS !! sincerely yours, PATRICIA CARRIVICK |
