Mensagem:  I guess the difference is in the context. When you say that you "used to have a hobby" you mean a not very specific time in the past. I "had a hobby" seems to be related to something a bit more specific regarding the time; a matter you are talking about. "They travel every weekend doesn't sound well to me. I'd say "used to travel".
