Mensagem:  Ligia, I'll just tell you something about the false cognitives, as they are of particular interest to me. I believe we will find that in most cases they will have older but still current meanings that are cognate, because both have sprung from the same Latin word. The classic example: "Assist" vs "Assistir" In Portuguese "assistir" has come to have the popular use of "to watch", "to view", etc - overwhelming it's older sense of "to help" - which is how it is still used in English. Actualmente, eh correto ainda dizer: "Pode me assiste carregar este?", nao eh? In English there are many such verbs, where they have some popular and widespread use - and retain an older but still legitimate meaning. So I think all the "false friends" can be found to not be false if we look at the whole range of possible uses.
