Mensagem:  The word 'man' was gender nuetral in AS (and was often used for animals and non-human beings as well), and is still used that way today in certain contexts. 'Wif' was a specific term for a female and was often used connected with 'man': 'wifman'. The pronounciation was corrupted to 'woman'. I append this info (with additions) from Skeat's English Etymology.
