For example: wide window? I always hear large window... (But there is a difference! When we talk about a "wide window", we are emphasizing the size of the window from side to side, ignoring the size from top to bottom. When we talk about a large window, we are speaking of the size of the window in general; from top to bottom and from side to side.) And is wide DOOR OK, or do I have to say wide DOORWAY? (But there is a difference! A door is the piece of wood that moves on hinges. A doorway is the "hole" in the wall or building that the door opens or closes. A door can be wide and so can a doorway.) |
