It is used as an intensive: The bear scared the bejesus out of us.
Originally, it was more popular in the African-American community. However, nowadays everybody regardless of ethinicity uses this and other "Black" slangs from time to time. As an ESL student, one thing you must know is the huge contribution the speech of the Americans of African descent i.e African-Americans have made to the Standard American English (SAE). As a matter of fact, African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) has more influence over the SAE than any other language or groups of people in the United States.
Whenever you hear an American slang term, chances are it came from AAVE.
