Mensagem:  If you are standing at a bus stop and want the driver to pull in and pick you up then we say "flag down" the bus. The motion is to raise and lower an arm. There is no flag (bandeira) involved. The expression probably comes from back in the old days when people would wave a handkerchief to the person driving a horse drawn vehicle.
