Assunto: | Re: sign/write/open UP |
Mensagem: | I´d like to know why do you use Up with almost all the verbs , even though they´re not phrasal verbs. Is it a matter of emphasis ? 2)Do you know how to say : esteira de gina´stica ? -------------------------------------------------- (1) We use "up" a lot in English just to confuse Brazilians. It's true. Adding "up" to a verb can change its meaning radically. to write = escrever to write up = To file a complaint against someone (often informally), to write a newspaper article about someone or something, etc. to sign = assinar (ou fazer um sinal ou falar com sinais) to sign up = to register (matricular), to volunteer in writing, to enroll in a class, etc. to open = abrir to open up = desabafar, ser mais franco e sincero, to increase the size of a road or canal, etc. The "up" doesn't necessarily emphasize anything, but it certainly can change the meaning of the verb. (2) I may be wrong, but I think that an "esteira de ginástica" is an excercise mat. |
