There were ten boys in the classroom.
Here they say "there" is the subject.
The subject is "boys" and were is the verb. There is an adverb and modifies were.
There were pictures on all the walls.
Here they say pictures is the subject and that "there" is called an expletive.
I think this is the same. Pictures is the subject, were is the verb and the modifying adverb is there.
