Actually, I prefer the "Would you mind typing a letter for me?" However, if there is an established working relationship, the question can be just as politely worded with: "Do you mind typing a letter for me?" Algo assim. Just as in Portuguese, there are different ways of saying the same thing in English.
I used to be a secretary and it would probably be boring to hear the same question time and time again from my boss with no change in the wording. However, the FIRST time a boss asks his secretary to do something for him (or her), "Would you mind . . ." would be the more polite/formal form.
