W3 on CD says one can also "lather the face" (spread lather over the face). It does not say, "smear lather..."
It seems to me that _smear_ means _overspread_. Can you and Wauber picture someone "overspreading" his expensive thick rich lather shaving cream all over his/her face and expect it to last down to the last drop?
Smearing does a lot more than does spreading, this NNSE only so much can guess. So can his buttons as he talks with them.
