Mensagem:  Ana is correct. Police is a collective noun.

The police are looking for the culprit. (the whole police force, many men and women so the verb is plural)

A policeman is going to every house on the block asking people if they have seen the culprit. (here we are talking about one specific police officer so the verb is singular)
