Mensagem:  Hello back again Mike It's very interesting what you have pointed out and I can see it when I tell my students that "I'm meeting Mary tomorrow" is future. They get thrilled at first, they don't realise that when they say "amanhã eu faço o relatório" (I'm going to do the report tomorrow) they are using the Present Simple (in Portuguese) to express a Future action because of the use of the adverb (tomorrow- amanhã). But having time separeted from tense verb is not an exclusivity of the English language. In Portuguese, as I've just pointed out, more than in English, the Present Simple is also used as Future, it can be used mainly in Literature to express past fact (the so-called narrative present) and even takes places of the Subjunctive Future (when, if I...) The conditional can be used as Present or Past simple. and there are others examples. So even the Romance languages still have the "dreadful" conjugation it's not so rigid used as you may think. And if one has a good command in English by no means the transition will mislead. I didn't want to undermine your assertion I am just point what a romance speaker views when confronting both languages, in the end they are not too different, manily if we think that English is the non-romance language which the most draws near romance languages. Do you speak any other language than English? See you, please reply José Roberto.
