Mensagem:  Dear Snow I completely understand you and my advice --they say here that if advice was anything good we would sell it :)-- is for your own sake in the meaning of the number of compositions you have to correct and how to give them the right and tactful correction you wish, I used to do that and I ended up having to correct about 30 page long texts and having another 30 lessons to teach!! About teachers not knowing how to correct, well maybe you can play down the importance of writing because text production is the last skill one develops in any language (even native language). Another thing is the fact that each text is a personal choice and therefore style, sometimes we correct something that is already right but we, according to our (pre)conceptions of right and wrong what goes in between, find the passage 'wrong'. R.A. Close says something like this in his "A Teacher's Grammar" (LTP) "Grammar is, many times, a matter of choice." Remember the at or in a small village affair some posts ago? I asked a native British (who teaches ESL) and he says: 'IN isn't better, it's just another possibility. I know learners often want to be told there's one best way to say things, but this misses the point. The question that leads to some insight isn't "Which is better?" but "Why are they both possible?"'
