Dear Pat, In one of our recent battles, you pointed an interesting fact-you said that African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) is not really a monopolized Black English, but instead a cultural ARTIFACT. Well, I totally agree. AAVE is not just Black English; it is an American cultural ARTIFACT. The fact that virtually all African-Americans are very fluent in Standard American English (SAE) validates my point. I felt like I needed to point this because I was afraid that a lot of the begining and intermediate ESL students of this forum may not understand this phenomenon. Regards, -Miguel Vieira |
