Assunto: | Re: African American Vernacular English (AAVE) |
Mensagem: | Pat, what I should've said is that although most African-Americans are ABLE/CAPABLE of speaking perfect Standard American English, they choose not to do so. From what I conclude is that in the minds of the ones who only speak AAVE, see AAVE as "home" language. Whereas Standard American English, or as they said "proper" English is "outside" i.e. white Language. However, when they go out for a Job interview, for instance, they all of sudden start talking "white" quite fluent in most cases. Standard American English is a survival tool. I believe that virtually all African-Americans do realize this fact regardless as to where they are from, the South or the Northeast. -Miguel Vieira |
