Mensagem:  Telling a poor white southerner who only speaks non-standard English that the English he speaks is actually one and the same to the type that poor Blacks do would most likely be taken offensively. As you know these people are not the most enlightened people in the world. Some of them still think that their war is still going on. In fact, considering that they are no longer just "WHITES" as are the rich colonialists, but labeled "white trash" is a huge blow to their egos. Consequently, it's understandable why they are so hostile towards the people who stripped them of this glorious identity-whiteness, by winning the war and liberating the niggers. And as a result, there went their JOBS (A lot of them were overseers) and prestige. Being considered "white" was a psychological luxury, albeit being poor. For instance, a common expression back in the slavery days from poor indentured whites was the following "At least I/We are not niggers". And when former slave "niggers" began to actually move up to the middle class and they remained poor, needless to say that they felt all the more anger towards yankees and their language i.e. Standard English What do you think? -Miguel Vieira
