I am thirty something (tenho trinta e tantos anos) and the word "ficar" has been around since I was a teenager. Back then, and I think still today, it means just to Hook up. Hook up used to mean, (I don´t know if it still does since these days I have no contact with americans), well it described a situation where a boy and a girl would engage in kissing and hugging. Both "ficar" and "hooking up" in my teen years explicitly signaled that there was NO SEX involved. Now giving the nature of humans that does not mean there was no sex involved (although usually there wasn´t according to the girl and time would almost always prove the girl right). So in conclusion, to the American girls in the town I used to live at and to the Brazilian girls from the same town during the same time period "ficar" AND "to hook up with" meant the same thing. This was in the early nineties.
As I stated before "hook up with ALSO meant " to meet up with someone" and in this other definition no physical contact at all is involved, people just met somewhere.
It is interesting that "ficar" causes as much controversy today as it did back then but for different reasons.
