"Payback" seems a bit strong in the sentence.  It means a form of vengeance, revenge, retaliation, etc.  A weaker expression could be "to get even".

 

In my humble opinion , think between siblings...'to get even with' fits best...

Now Dale/Tom  or anyone else...let me as you something...'vengeance and revenge'..are they simply synonyms? or there is a slight difference in use...
