English 101 is exactly what the other poster said it is: an introduction to academic writing. A college (university) student typically takes English101 in the first or second semester of his/her first year in college. It kinda gives him/her a foundation for writing papers (compositions) on the zillion of topics that college students wind up writing for the remaining 4 or 5 years of their college experience. At the end of the semester you get a letter grade ranging from A (perfect) to B (relatively good) to C (average) to D (low performance) to F (failure) . If you get an A or a B it is a pretty good indication that you will do well in other classes that require a substantial amount of writing.
English101 was my very first college class - so needless to say I have very fond memories of it.
