d) The metaphor gets across it well.


This sentence is wrong.  It gives the image that the metaphor is crossing "it" as if it were a river, bridge, etc.  If the sentence is rephrased "The metaphor gets it across well" then it makes sense. It is now saying that the metaphor is communicating an image or idea.


The sentence reminds me of another that was used in a song about a German speaking mother talking to her son.  In the song she says, "Throw Mother from the train a kiss."  Good German, perhaps.  Bad English, definitely.
