As a "synonym"?  Explain this to me.

"To listen to" and "to listen for" have very different meanings.

I listen to (the) music.  The music is playing, I am hearing the music, and hopefully I am enjoying the music.

I listen for the music.  It is anticipated that the music is going to be played, and I am expecting to hear it, waiting to hear it, etc.

(I sit in the dark, listening for her footsteps. = I can't hear her footsteps now, but there is a possibility that I will hear them.  I am expecting to hear them.   Possibly I am even afraid that I will hear them.  However, I am not hearing her footsteps at this moment.)
