Márcio, can you believe that I was back in bed and almost asleep when I realized I had made that mistake! We joke, "Once I thought I'd made a mistake, but I was wrong." Well, we can't blame the cachaça today.
"What for" is sometimes used instead of "why".
(1a) "Did you bring the camera?"
(1b) "What for?" - Why would I want/bring a camera?
(2a) "I think my brother will be there tomorrow."
(2b) "What for?" - Why will he be there? What will be the purpose of his trip/presence?
