Are we talking "guarda-pó"?

A smock can have long or short sleeves, or it can be sleeveless.  "Lab coat" is a fairly common term for something worn in a laboratory to keep one's clothing clean.

I wore something around paint years ago, but for the life of me I can't think what we called it.  It had short sleeves that ended at the elbows.  Its purpose was to keep paint from getting on our shirts and trousers.  Instead of buttons in the front, the two front edges overlapped and two thick cords or belts tied behind the wearer.  Similar garments are used in bakeries and other businesses.  Possibly we called them "coats".
