Alexandre is correct about "estar de plantão" but Babi said the person worked twelve hours on and thirty-six hours off. That is a rotating shift.
The twelve hours worked are sometimes called a "trick" and the workers are "trick workers" but that connotation has sort of fallen out of use because there is a word associated with prostitution (tricks) that most workers don't want to be associated with.
