The name comes from the French, "La crosse", but the game originated with the North American Indians. It's a very popular game in Canada, but it's less known in the USA. There are ten plays on each team. Players use long sticks with net-like devices on one end with which they throw, catch, and carry a ball from one end of the playing field to the other. It's a rough and rowdy game. There have been efforts to have it included in the Olympics, but it's not widely played. As I recall, in the film "The Last of the Mohicans" there are a few minutes of a Lacrosse game. In the USA I often attended Native American "powwows" (intertribal festivities featuring competitive dancing, sales of handicrafts, etc.), and lacrosse was sometimes played at them.
