to have a bad time = ter um momento ruim, não se divertir, sofrer, etc.

Although I agree with the above, the expression is often used to mean "to have serious problems, to have bad luck".  "He had a bad time of it in New York.  Anything that could go wrong, went wrong.  He was robbed, he lost his passport, he was supposed to stay with a friend but the friend was injured in a car accident, etc."  "Mary had a bad time on the trip.  She got sick, the car broke down, and she ran out of money."
