'Shall we meet at dawn' is an allusion to dueling, that old-fashioned practice of  people killing or maiming each-other over trifling nothings. The duelists would meet at dawn, with their 'seconds', friends who would step in and finish the job if necessary. In reality the seconds generally tried to keep the duel to a contest in bad marksmanship rather than bloodshed.
