Look, maybe to the not so class-conscious Americans, soccer may be exclusively associated with immigrants. However, to many of the class-conscious Americans, soccer is a relatively 'elite' sport that is popular among the high-end suburbun crowd. Otherwise, why would the term have been coined in the first place? Why not basketball-mom or baseball-mom? Why soccer-mom? Think about it!
Futhermore, mind you, the term 'elite' has a minority connotation - "minority" in a numeric sense, that is, not in a political sense, obviously. In other words, insofar as soccer is very popular among a minority of Americans, the moneyed ones, it thus explains the reason why some of the more class conscious Americans associate it with being an 'elite' sport, regardless of its huge popularity among immigrants - who are for the most members of the working class.
