Yes, I also found this tradition weird when I first heard of it.
Horseshoes are in fact used as a symbol of good luck in weddings. I
don't think the association is clear today, but I read that, in the
past, horseshoes were either a symbol of fertility (Greeks) or a way of
keeping the Devil away (Christians). I am sure the natives can give us
more details about this curious practice.
