Mensagem:  Caro Jose, Yes, it is a very confounding language. I'd seen most of those examples before - except taught/praught. There are, of course, logical reasons for most of the apparent absurdities. In the case of teach/preach, what look like verbs of the same morphological group, are in fact a case of accidental convergence - very common in English. "Teach" is from an original AS verb, while "preach" is from one of the many Latin based verbs introduced during Middle English. The old verbs have that typical spelling change in the past tenses: "taught", while the Latin verbs just use the suffix "-ed": "preached". I know it is much harder for you guys to learn English than it is for me to learn Portuguese!
