Dale, see if this my interpretation makes any sense;


I think that we can't use "screwd up" in this case, because the subject is the agent of the action,which is not the case, see;
"se deu mal" -  the subject is the patient, receives the action.(Vítima)


See the difference:
-He got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife and she said NO! - Pacient.(Vítima)
-This time I really screwd up badly - Agent.(Bandido)


"Quem nunca se deu mal com o amor, que atire a primeira pedra!"
