Mensagem:  No doubt I tend to see things from the mainstream perspective, although I flatter myself as being capable of imagining myself in the other guy's shoes. But I didn't really mean for my point to be about black/white relations. My point is that the vast majority of people anywhere (obviously including African-Americans), learn one native language and one dialect of that language. For instance, most Rhode Islanders have a very strong and distinctive accent - and the great majority never change their way of speaking even though they certainly heard standard speech in school and from some other more educated speakers. Even though it is commonly known that for a more successful career, regional accents and dialects are best discarded, they generally aren't for the simple reason that most people aren't capable of doing so. Consequently I don't agree that most African-Americans master SAE in school, quite the contrary in my experience. However, my experience was mostly in the South whereas yours has been in the North and probably amongst an economically much more advantaged group. As far as a separate nation for African-Americans, that idea came and went over a hundred years ago. Liberia, of course, is a third world country but even if it wasn't I don't think many Americans of any color would be moving there. Minority and mainstream Americans have got to learn to live as one group, and we are getting there.
