Think Indian.  North American Indian.  The hatchet (whether made of metal or stone) was a favorite weapon.  Even a dull one could split your head open like a ripe pumpkin.  It is said that some tribes in the East had a tradition of "burying the hatch" (disposing of a weapon) as a sign they did not wish to fight.

They, North American Indians,  either buried the hatchet in the ground or in your skul, this was a sure sign that the fighting was over.
