The Battle of the Bulge (a Batalha da saliência) took place in December 1944 when the German Army counterattacked the Armed Forces of the Allies.

Today, in jest we say "the Battle of the Bulge" when we are referring to weight loss.  You get fat around the tummy (your tummy bulges, or you have a bulge around your waist).  It is a battle that you must fight to become thin again.  This is exactly the kind of slang expression I should be giving you in my "AmSlang" posts.

In the Battle of the Bulge, I'm ready to surrender to some chocolate cake and ice cream.
