Mensagem:  the 9 modal auxiliaries in english are as follows will would can could shall should may might must --- all have two forms (tenses?) - proximate and remote - except must which does not have any remote meaning (therefore no form to express a meaning which does not exist!!) these all have the same structures associated with them they allow the speaker to communicate about subjective concerns/interpretations such as obligation, likelihood, necessity etc their use is variable and inconsistent (as one would expect with words used for subjective interpretation of such matters) some say that the group of modal aux.s are not even verbs at all the various interpretations on this subject reflect the fact that english grammar was hijacked by latinophile academics at the end of the century before last and hasn't yet rid itself of confusion about what its structure and origins really are i suppose people are also too busy using it to give a hoot about the mechanics and engineering principles behind the language it would seem that the important thing is to have some grasp of how they are used hope this helps a bit
