From my point of view, if one's is living in an English speaking country, the task of being fluent in its language within 18 months, if taken seriously, is fairly easy. However, if you do your best, work your finger to the bones here in Brazil, you may get quite a good knowledge of it studying the same spell of time. In my own case, I've been studying this wonderful language for just 2 years and, believe it or not, I'm already able to hold an "ordinary" conversation with just a few hitches.
English is all over me, though. I mean, due to fact that I have to work to make a living and share my precious extra time with some hard subjects from college, from the moment I wake up to the moment I turn myself in, everything I do, I try to do it in English. I never watch any movie if it's not in English, I try to meet as much people who study English as possible. When I'm at home, apart from a few bands, I just listening to music in English. Anyway, I've been doing everything that's up to me to overcome all the hurdles and obstacles to be keen at it, cause I'm passionate to this language and know that some day all this work is bound to payoff.
Sorry for spinning your wheels, but I need to practise my writing :) firstname.lastname@example.org.
