Cricket is played basically in ex-British Empire nations
so you have the usual suspects: England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa
but fortunately the nations of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are cricket junkies (and produce hot players)
there is also a team known as the West Indies (which includes various Carribean nations) plus a couple of others
Cricket is a sport which usually divides people up into lovers or haters of the game - many regard it as exciting as watching grass grow or paint dry!!
For those who acquire the taste however it is a thoroughly enjoyable, complex, subtle and exciting sport - with all the frustrations of controversial decisions, unpredictable form changes and upsets
The three main varieties of the game are: 1) test matches (which last up to five days) 2) limited over matches which take 4 or 5 hours and 3) most recently the 20 - 20 version which is over in about three hours
It's two hard to explain here but the basic principle is scoring points by hitting the ball (as in baseball)
Australia is playing a limited over match against South Africa in Melbourne this afternoon (in a couple of hours) (it is part of a tri-nation series also involving Sri Lanka) - you can check out the live scorecard and updates at www.abc.net.au or a website called Crick8.
Cricket is to chess as baseball is to draughts!
And by the way, didn't Australia get a lucky draw in the Coppa del Mondo in Germany!!
Only shame is we won't be able to meet (beat) Brazil in the final (tongue in cheek)!!
