I agree with you that being illegal in the US should make everything much harder, mainly after 9-11.
The one who is illegal in the US must strive to survive. Many times, they have to have more than one job and even so they receive minimum wages.
I, myself, would never come to this country without a proper visa and I feel very lucky to have a green card now and to be able to have a well-paid job.
But I would never criticize whom has decided to come here illegaly. God knows what their reasons are.
As far as the waiver program I do believe the "whiteness" has a lot to do with it.
