Mensagem:  Dear Mick, I think you missed the point. In David's example "If I were/was he/him ..." the question regarded not the verb form, but the pronoun. And what Ron and I are trying to say is that, from the standpoint of a second language learner in Brazil (and most of them are beginners), it is important to explore communicative strategies and avoid getting stuck in cross-language comparisons and grammar theory. For example, instead of saying: "If I were/was he/him I wouldn't buy a new car", one might as well consider saying: "If I were/was Paul I wouldn't buy a new car" or simply "I don't think it's a good idea to buy a new car."
