I’ve asked about that expression  for an American friend of mine who lives in Brazil, and he answered me:

Hi Marco,
Glad I can help you.
 
I have not used the phrase "disputar a tapas", but an English equivalent would be something like. "Fight for it."
 
Example: If I want the same job as another person. I am going to fight for it.
 
Something less strong would be. "I am going to compete for it."
