From the example you gave to Mick 1 - "If I were/was he/him I wouldn't buy a new car", one might as well consider saying: 2 - "If I were/was Paul I wouldn't buy a new car" You meant that instead of using a pronoun it would be more usual using a noun, as the first person who answered me said, but I wasn't so sure. So, I can tell the students that the second sentence you gave me would be the right one. Thanks everyone who helped me, David
