Mensagem:  Dear Marcia, I think we are talking about two different things. You're right when you stress the importance of studying phonology, especially when we compare the sounds of our native language with the sounds of the target language. However, Marcelo's question regarding his student's difficulty more likely refers to spelling-to-sound rules. This is a typical question that every teacher hears from beginners. As they have contact primarily with the written language, they expect the language to have a certain correlation between spelling and pronunciation and resent from the lack of regularity in the oral interpretation of the graphemes. The very few spelling-to-sound rules we can formulate for the English vowels are usually spoiled by exceptions and normally of little usefulness as we demonstrate on http://www.sk.com.br/sk-spell.html.
