I saw something years ago in Los Angeles that I've never been able to forget.  An instructor told a very funny joke in English.  When he reached the punchline (remate), he told that part of the joke in Spanish.  People who did not speak Spanish, of course, had no idea what speakers of Spanish were laughing.  His object was, of course, to show how important the Spanish language was in California.

I like your idea of starting your talk in English.  You've kept it short, and it has to be short.  If you talk too much in English to people who do not understand, they will stop listening to you and not really care when you switch back to Portuguese.

Good luck!
