Yes, confusing, isn't it?
Once you have laid it on the table, it is lying there. To lay is to put it down, the act of laying it down, but after it is there, static, it is lying there.
Why don't you try to come up with a sentence for that one? It can be crazy, loony, insane -- the crazier, the better with these things so they will stick in the mind. If it's too loony, don't post it, just remember it :) :) :) Let me know how it goes, 'ta?
