As I suspected, there is no direct correllary for the modal expression, in many cases. Hence, it is perhaps nearly impossible to translate the nuances.
There is an expression in english that perhaps captures the uncertainty and ambiguity of the modals:
"Coulda, woulda, shoulda"; it's what someone might say when they have tried to do something and failed, for whatever reason. It doesn't matter - failure is failure.
