I would go with number one.
Number 2 sounds wierd. Wouldn't it be "As much as some of those romantic poets died young, so did Keats" ?
Despite dictionary states "as much" to mean "the same", it sounds a little odd to my ears that structure. I always understood "as much" as "to the same amount" of something like: the same amount of money, love, help, effort,etc, anything that one can think of having an amount (countable or not).
