Mensagem:  It shouldn't be too hard to get some precise numbers on how many Portuguese have immigrated to the US in the last few decades. If you were to call the Portuguese embassy in D.C., they would probably give you a precise number. You may also choose to call the Portuguese consulates in Boston or Providence. Anyway, most Portuguese and their descendants live in the following states: Masachussetts, Rhode Island and California. For the most part, they keep their language and culture, unlike other European immigrants. The "other" European immigrants have essencially become "white". In America, becoming "white" means homogenizing (Americanizing) your culture and becoming monolingual with no trace of an accent. Though I must say that with the influx of the new immigrants, i.e. Latin Americans and South East Asians, multilingualism and culturalism are now kinda cool. -Miguel Vieira
