Are you talking about vocabulary in general or a specialized vocabulary? If you want to learn a lot of words related to the same general subject (carpentry, geology, computers, etc.), I'd suggest finding a pictorial dictionary such as that published by Oxford Duden. The one I have next to me now has 62 terms related to a post office, 273 related to airplanes and airports, etc.
Everyone has at least one method that works. I've always been a big believer in "flashcards". They are easy to carry, you only study the ones that are don't feel comfortable with yet, etc. Other people like lists of words. Whatever works for you.
